MY STORY (SOKOYA)
Government College, Ibadan in January 1970. My senior brother was already in the school (Sesan Sokoya; Swanston House
1968). My first cousin was also in the School (Dewale Osipitan;
Carr House 1968). I was in Carr House and my leur was Gbemi Oguntula; the head of our family was the illustrious Kolade Mosuro(1964); Cricket Captain of the School.
In my second year, I tried to join the choir organized by Mr. Sanya Fasina (Music Teacher) so that I could be part of the combined GCI/Queens School choir that would allow me to see my sister who was then in Queens School.
Mr. Fasina confirmed what I had known; I was not a singer! Unlike my cousin and form mate, late Tope Oduguwa, who was a canary with a high soprano voice. Suddenly, I discovered that members of the Scripture Union (popularly called SU) were allowed to attend Fellowship in Queen's School on Sunday afternoons. So, I joined SU. My Sister and a cousin were also members of the SU. I enjoyed fellowship: the biscuits and Tree Top orange squash. However, more importantly, I saw my sister and cousin more regularly.
Today, I am a Pastor and servant of the Most High God. God had mercy on me and guided me to Himself. Praise be to God. Interestingly, I was one of the fat boys in our set and I was bullied lot because of that. I never enjoyed those early days. Today, I may even be one of the thinnest. Life has changed all that.
I am grateful to God that I attended GCI. The all-round training, formal and informal, has contributed in no small way in shaping my person.
