1997 Set Donates Football Equipment to GCI Football Academy

Government College Ibadan (GCI) on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, received a generous donation of football kits and equipment from the 1997 Set of the Government College Ibadan Old Boys Association (GCIOBA). The contribution is part of the Set’s commitment to strengthening sports development and promoting excellence in football within the school.

The donated items included: 9 triangle cones, 2 keeper gloves, 30 hoses, 50 round cones, 14 jerseys, 1 whistle, 2 referee cards, 30 shin guards, 4 footballs, 30 training wears, 1 electric board, and 15 football boots.

Presenting the items on behalf of the 1997 Set were Mr. Otufale Olusegun Babatunde (14068, Powell), Mr. John Abayomi Ogunjobi (14053, Grier), and Mr. Bayonle Olakojo (13584, Field).

Receiving the equipment were Mr. Lanre Olubi (5900, Carr, 1985, General Secretary, GCIOBA), Mr. Oyekola Muraina (9106, Grier, 1991 September; GCI/GCIOBA Facility Manager), Mr. Opeyemi Okeleke (16094, Swanston, 2000; Acting GCIOBA School Administrator), and Mr. Gbolahan Ogunniyi (18231, Field, 2006; GCI Museum Administrator).

Speaking at the presentation, representatives of the 1997 Set reaffirmed their dedication to supporting their alma mater, stressing the role of sports in instilling discipline, resilience, and teamwork among students.

The GCIOBA leadership and school management commended the 1997 Set for their generosity, describing the gesture as timely and impactful. They noted that the equipment would significantly improve the training and performance of the GCI Football Academy and Team.

The Acting School Administrator, Mr. Opeyemi Okeleke, also urged the Set to be holistic in their promotion of football at GCI by partnering with the 1973 September Set in the maintenance of the College’s main football pitch, so that the facility can provide a standard and sustainable playing ground for both training and competitive matches.

This donation continues the tradition of Old Boys giving back to the College, reinforcing the bond of loyalty and service that has defined generations of Government College Ibadan alumni.
