NNPC Foundation Donates 1,000 STEM Books to Government College Ibadan
In a remarkable show of support for science education and youth development, the NNPC Foundation officially commissioned a donation of 1,000 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) books and a mini-library at Government College Ibadan (GCI) on Wednesday, 18th June, 2025. The event was graced by dignitaries from the education sector, school administrators, representatives of the NNPC Foundation, and excited students of the prestigious institution.
Representing the Managing Director of the NNPC Foundation, Mrs Ololade Oduwole, a senior official of the foundation emphasized that the gesture aligns with the Foundation’s unwavering commitment to education and national development. She encouraged the students to make the most of the materials provided and decried the waning reading culture among youth, urging a revival.
"Why science books?" she asked rhetorically. "Because Nigeria must bridge the technological gap between itself and developed nations. Science and innovation are the engines that power global progress, and we are determined to play our part in preparing Nigeria's next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators."
In his welcome address, the principal of Government College Ibadan Senior School, Mr. Solomon Oladokun, described the donation as a monumental step toward securing a brighter future for the students. “This is more than a donation, it is an investment in the minds and futures of our boys. GCI has long been a force to reckon with, not just in Nigeria but across the globe. These books will enrich our library, rekindle a vibrant reading culture, and equip our students with the knowledge to thrive in a competitive world,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of the parents, the Chairman of the GCI Senior School PTA, Prince Adeniyi Adeniji, expressed profound appreciation to the NNPC Foundation. “Your investment in our children’s education will not go unrewarded. We assure you that these books will be treasured, maintained, and utilized to the fullest,” he stated.
Delivering a goodwill message on behalf of GCIOBA, Mr. Opeyemi Okeleke, the Administrative Secretary of GCIOBA, expressed deep appreciation to the NNPC Foundation for the invaluable contribution. “This library stands out, not only because of the number of books, but because of the quality of investment it represents. In many places, such gestures are rare, but the NNPC Foundation has once again made its mark,” he said. Mr. Okeleke assured the Foundation that the books would be properly maintained and judiciously used to benefit generations of students. He reaffirmed GCIOBA’s commitment to supporting the school’s growth and its longstanding tradition of academic excellence.
The Principal of Junior School 2, Mr. O. O. Obanisola, who also gave the vote of thanks, echoed the sentiments of gratitude and commended the Foundation for its generosity. “This mini-library stands out not only because of its resources but because of the heart behind the donation. You rarely see such thoughtful gestures today. We promise to use the books judiciously,” he said.
Adding a balanced perspective, the event compere and Head of Languages Department, Mrs. Sobo, applauded the STEM initiative but reminded stakeholders not to overlook the Arts. “While STEM is essential, the Arts also play a critical role in developing well-rounded students. We must strike a balance,” she advised.
The event featured captivating presentations by students Lazarus Darasimi and Kelechi Igwe Okereke, who spoke eloquently on the importance of educational books in shaping young minds.
Representing the Oyo State Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Mrs. F.A. Alamu, Director of Curriculum Development, delivered an inspiring message. She conveyed the government’s gratitude to NNPC Foundation on behalf of the Commissioner, Mr. Emmanuel Olusegun Olayiwola, and the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology. “This is a seed planted to secure a future-ready generation. These books are not just pages; they are tools for comprehension, innovation, and transformation. This donation directly supports the Oyo State Government’s agenda for qualitative education,” she remarked.
Other notable attendees included Mr. Ogundare, Principal of Junior School 1; Mr. Adeoti, Deputy Director of Curriculum Development at the Ministry; and Mrs. Modinat Shitta from the NNPC Foundation.
