MY GCI CHOICE
My family and I lived in Lagos and in the run up to the common entrance examination, I selected a number of schools. There were a number of very good schools in Lagos to which I applied, although I also applied to GCI on the recommendation of extended family members who lived in Ibadan, as one of my older relatives was already studying there. My heart was initially set on attending Igbobi College and although I eventually secured admission to a number of secondary schools, two things happened which swung things around.
First, my interview for Igbobi was delayed and secondly, the GCI interview was a 3-day residential affair which turned out to be a real treat! For one who dwelt in the busy Lagos metropolis, being immersed in the forestry and farmland scenery of Apata-Ganga for a few days with the other boys was an unmissable adventure. Freedom to explore the bush paths, the older buildings and surrounding fields was magical. There were three of us from my class set at Ireti Primary School – myself, Adewumi Ogunleye, and Imonikhe Ahimie. We had the entire GCI campus to ourselves for those few days. There were so many experiences and memories in addition to making new friends and learning a bit of Latin. So much so that for me the decision was firm and irreversible – GCI became my first choice of school. Later, when I eventually attended my delayed interview at Igbobi College on a rainy day, the early fascination had evaporated. Not only was I admitted, my two classmates also attended GCI and I’ll continually be grateful for the friends and experience of passing through the school on the rock.
