THE UPPER 5 LESSON
In the early days I don't have a particular scenario to remember except that I had to force myself to Carr House from Swanston. Perhaps only for regular and continuous harassment by seniors, due to the activities of my immediate elder brother who left in 1971- EshyMiliki.
I remember a particular event in Form One. My House Teacher sent me to Oloko only to be cajoled by a Form 2 student from Swanston House. I eventually lost the one pound given to me for the purchase. I carried the long bench for one month in the prep- room. I finally managed to pay back, though he refused to accept the money.
Another interesting incident was when I was late to collect "Doyen's dinner!... House Prefect! I had to jump out of the window during prep when he came calling.
My best time was when I returned for "Upper" 5 late 1976 with aggregate 27 but with "pass" in English and Mathematics. I enjoyed the adorable respect of my new classmates because I was especially good in Chemistry and Geography - those rigorous and obscure subjects. It was then that I realized that the supposed GENIUSES, do in fact put in serious efforts, but they are more clever than most of us. I can remember meeting Nirano in an unused room, reading! Then Dairoshius reading Modern Mathematics by J.B.O. Ojo, a whole book, in a day! - ti egungun ba nle e oogbodo duro!
Mention must be made of OLUSOLA KOLADE now a Pastor of a renowned Church that I belong, (VINE BRANCH CHURCH). Two months to the examinations, he gave me a full file containing WAEC past questions, that Dairoshius and me treated thoroughly.
I ended up with aggregate 11.
The path was now open Knowing that my new popularity and apparent success didn't come at an easy cost, I was advised by two great individuals to stay for A-Levels... Dr. Kunle Adekile and the renowned Professor Aluko. Can you imagine dropping physics because of “chimney” in second term Form 4 only to pick it up again at “Upper” 5? I give credits to “Gbenga Dairo, my brother, Engineer MAF Esho and Mr. Omiwale... the best physics teacher I ever met”. I had a better score in Physics than Biology at A-Levels. Note that Akinyinka Esho, Olusola Kolade and Olayinka Bangbelu (Chuck Norris) turned out to be DENTISTS.
