PRIVILEGED

Born on 15th December to the family of Dr. Zacchaeus Adekunle and Mrs. Olufunke Esther Adejumo in Ibadan, Oyo State Nigeria, I attended Luba Private School, Ijebu-Ode as a boarding student. I was the first student from this school to have gained admission to Government College Ibadan. That time students who successfully gained admission into secondary schools were called out at the assembly ground, and the names of respective secondary schools were also mentioned. When it got to my turn on that fateful day, the name Government College Ibadan was called out first, followed by my name. There was a deep silence that immediately covered the entire assembly ground as if something strange had happened.
Since that day, I knew I was privileged to head in the directionof a very special school. Upon my arrival at Apata Ganga, I was able to adjust very quickly, since I had boarding experience in my private primary school. That previous boarding experience began to pay off early because I was the first junior student who was given the neatest boy award. Then the practice was for junior boys to clean up our rooms, which housed junior and senior boys, in preparation for weekly sanitation exercise which usually took place every Saturday. I recall the then House Master, Mr. Aluko, aka Mango, commented severally about the neatness in the room under my care.
While I was at GCI, I found out that the educational system affords the opportunity to not only develop intellectual capacity, but many other virtues such as humility, discipline, respect, loyalty. Some highlights of my unforgettable stay at GCI include when I was allowed to play football (soccer) for the senior house team (Carr House) while I was still in junior class. Eventually when I got to Form Five, I was made the captain of the Football and Table Tennis teams for the entire school. I eventually graduated from Government College Ibadan in 1976. I am immensely grateful to be privileged to have passed through
GCI where I met the finest crop of gentlemen and a solid foundation was laid for a lifetime association and friendship.
God bless Carr House. God bless GCI. God bless Nigeria
