1971 SET FLAGS OFF PROJECT LIGHT-UP GCI
Government College Ibadan receives again a classic and colossal give back from her Old Boys Association as 1971 set flagged off its Light-Up GCI Project on Thursday, 15th July, 2021 at the Seminar Room, GCIOBA House, GCI, Apata, Ibadan.
The Multi-Million Naira project which is to commemorate the Set's 50 years of entry into the prestigious College entails the provision of modern, efficient, sustainable and top-notch solar powered street lights for the school's Access Roads as well as solar electrification of the House master's residence. The Golden Anniversary project was aimed at boosting the security of lives and properties in the college, especially at night; at a time like this when insecurity in the country is at its peak.
Speaking at the Briefing, Wole Adebayo, the Financial Secretary of 1971 Set, delivered the goodwill message of the Set's Captain/Chairman, Seye Fadahunsi and commented that the project upon its completion would make GCI a haven, and complement the efforts of GCIOBA in the restoration of the school's glory, and also making their Alma Mater a model for its peers.
The Project Consultant, Dotun Tokun of the 1972 Set, addressed the members of the celebrating Set, delegates from GCIOBA National Executive Council, as well as the principals of the College present at the Flag-Off ceremony. In his address, he mentioned that the Street Lights would start from the Main Gate, down to the Admin Block as well as the old Grier House end. He explained that the poles would be 40 meters apart, and the radius of the brightness of the light on each pole would be 20 meters. He assured the audience that the solar lights to be installed at GCI are quite different from some States' solar projects that have failed over time. He added that the project has a 10-year warranty. He concluded that the project would be completely delivered in 10 days, DV.
Present at the Flag-Off Ceremony was Dapo Sonola (1970), Chairman, GCIOBA Assets Management Committee who gave kudos to the 1971 Boys for their timely, beautiful and needful project. He advised that the Street Lights should be extended to the academic areas so as to provide security for the infrastructures therein.
The Senior School Principal, Mr. Oluwole Adewale in his response expressed his gratitude to the 1971 Set for their thoughtfulness, and for availing their hard earned resources for the uplift of their Alma Mater. He assured the Set of proper care of the solar project.
It would be recalled that 1991-January Set, among the 2021 Celebrating Sets (1971, 1981, 1991-January and 1991-September Sets) had earlier completed and commissioned its own project - renovation of GCI Administrative Block earlier in the year, precisely on 14th January, 2021.
