1991 JANUARY SET CELEBRATES 30TH YEAR ANNIVERSARY, COMMISSIONS GCI ADMINISTRATIVE BLOCK
It was a day of sheer bliss as the 1991-January Set of Government College Ibadan Old Boys Association, on Saturday, 16th January, 2021 commissioned the newly renovated Administrative Block of Government College Ibadan to mark her 30th year of entry into the prestigious institution.
Shortly after the welcoming and entertaining parade by GCI Cadet team, the project was commissioned by the GCIOBA President, Wale Babalakin (Grier, 1971) ably represented by the Vice President II, Seun Abimbola (Carr, 1981). While speaking at the event compered by Idowu Adesokan at the GCI Assembly hall, Seun Abimbola applauded the Set for acknowledging the blessings of God upon their lives and for channeling their affluence to the uplift of the Alma Mater that made them. He mentioned it that they had not just passed through GCI, GCI also passed through them; as they have made an indelible prints in the annals of history of the school by giving back to the school, in a mighty proportion, as practised by the ancient and older Sets of the school. He congratulated the Class of 1991-January for delivering such a magnificent and befitting project, and delivered the warm regards of the President to all members of the Set. Furthermore, the Vice President II reminded the Set to not only hand over the project to the school, but also adopt and maintain the project as a pet project, in line with the GCIOBA Assets Management guidelines. He added that the project would be duly celebrated at the National Reunion of the Association by October, 2021.
The Set Chairman, Gbenga Ajani; who spoke with glee in his Welcome Address reiterated the commitment of his Set to the vision of the Association of restoring GCI to excellence. He added that despite the Covid-19 challenges, the Set remained focused, dogged and resilient to deliver the project at the exact time that the Set would clock 30 (precisely 14th January, 2021). He appreciated God for making the project come to fruition, and thanked every member of the Set for their numerous supports thus far.
The Association's Treasurer and General Secretary, Akin Orowale (1968) and Yinka Yusuf (1985) respectively, alongside friends of the Set, teachers and students of GCI graced the epochal event, and commended the entire boys of 1991-January Set for giving a modern and exquisite facelift to the school's agelong administrative block.
A minute silence in memory of the departed members of the Set was observed, after which the project was dedicated to the souls of the departed Old Boys of the Set - Onwuka Clement, Seun Sule, Abiodun Daodu, Jide Omiyale, Erulore, Kunle Adepoju & Soji Adepoju.
The Project Committee Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Set, Tosin George, in his Closing Remarks earnestly pleaded with the school management to take a proper care of the multimillion naira facility handed over to them. He appreciated everyone present for felicitating with the Class of 1991-January on her Pearl Anniversary.
It would be recalled that the GCI JETS Club, GCI Photography Club, GCI Barbing Club, as well as the Maths Lecture Theatre and Maths Staff Room are parts of the pet projects of 1991-January Set.
