GCIOBA honours four Old Boys, and commissions multimillion-naira projects

The Government College Ibadan Old Boys Association, GCIOBA on Saturday, 21st of October, 2017 honoured one of its members, the Chairman of the Governing Council, Lead City University, Ibadan, Prof. Jide Owoeye, and three other former students of the school for their outstanding contributions to the development of education and humanity.

The Award Ceremony, which was held on the school�s premises in Apata, Ibadan, was part of the school�s 88th Anniversary and 2017 Reunion programme.

It was attended by the Patron of the Association and foremost Agronomist, Dr. Lekan Are; and the Oyo State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Adeniyi Olowofela, among many other dignitaries.

Other Old Boys honoured were Adeniyi Owolade (1968), John Oshinyimika (1965), and Thomas Obanya (1964).

The highlight of the event was the inauguration of the multimillion-naira projects executed by three different Class Sets of the School celebrating their milestone years of entry into the premier Institution.

The projects included the rehabilitation of the Physics and Chemistry Laboratories by the 1967-1971/1973 set, to mark the 50th Anniversary of their admission into the school. The project was completed with a sum of Eighteen Million Naira only.

Also, the SSS I Block of classrooms was renovated by the 1982 Set at a cost of Three Million Naira to mark their 35th Anniversary of gaining admission into the school.

Similarly, the 1977 Set renovated the Class Five�s Block of classrooms. The facilities were inaugurated by Prof. Olowofela, who commended the Old Boys for giving back to their Alma Mater, calling other Alumni Asoociations to imitate the Government College Ibadan Old Boys Association, GCIOBA.

The National President of GCIOBA, Biodun Jolaoso, said the Association decided to help the school in order to make it great again.

While commending the Oyo State Government for establishing Governing Councils for secondary schools in the State, Jolaoso said the Association had developed an understanding with the Government which had resulted in the revival of the school�s fortunes.

He added that apart from twelve students that got scholarships through Dereck John Bullock Foundation, the Association had also established a N250m-Intervention Fund to help the school, with contributions coming from all Branches, Class Sets and members of the Association at home and in the Diaspora.
