1986 SET REVIVES YOUNG FARMERS CLUB AT GCI

EVENT TYPE:

1986 Set of Government College Ibadan Old Boys Association has on Thursday, 12th May, 2022, re launched an Agricultural club named "Young Farmers Club" at her Alma Mater.

The Club which comprises the Agric. students and teachers of Government College Ibadan drawn across both junior and senior classes is premised on the creation of a farmland in the school whereby the members of the club would be taught and shown modernized system of farming, and also practice the real farming. The farmland is located at the area behind Aso Rock.

The Assets Management Committee Chairman, Dapo Sonola (2192, Carr, 1970) described the Agric. project as a very important project that would complement the hardware interventions of GCIOBA. He appreciated the 1986 Set for their strategic efforts to always build the capacity of the students. It would be recalled that the Set had earlier initiated Summer ICT School and Project X - ICT skills acquisition programmes for GCI students in 2018.
He congratulated GCI Boys for such privilege granted to them and early exposure to a life changing career. He noted that their school is a special school that enjoys uncommon love and interventions that no other school in Nigeria can boast of. He charged the students to take the project very serious, as the hard earned resources of the donors would be given to them in trust, with more to come; to benefit the students, the society and the country at large. He appealed to the Boys to take proper care of the farm implements, and to remember to give back to the Alma Mater that shaped them.

The AMC Chairman used the medium to inform all GCI Old Boys that all material donations to GCI will now have Asset tags. He also advised the 1986 Set to ensure that their farm implements and equipment are properly stored in a well secured place.

While addressing the Club members present at the event, Adeola Ojelabi (6369, Powell, 1986) briefed the audience that the newly created farmland would have Deep Root Irrigation system, Greenhouse, Farm Storage Care; among many other modern facilities and technologies that would be deployed to the farm. He also added that the Club would partner with International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and National Horticultural Research Institute (NIHORT) in the areas of exchange of ideas, farm inputs, farm seedlings and excursion. He concluded by thanking the GCIOBA Asset Management Committee for allowing 1986 Set to be part of history of Government College Ibadan.

The Senior School Principal, Mr. Peter Awodiran expressed his happiness over the beautiful initiative of the Set, especially the modernization and inclusion of technology in the farm being instituted at the school.

The National Treasurer, Akin Orowale (1968) graced the event and gave the Closing prayer.
