DJ Bullock Foundation Holds Second Inter School Theatre Contest

The second edition of Dereck John Bullock Foundation Inter-School Theatre Contest came up on Wednesday, 15th January, 2020 at the Assembly Hall of Government College Ibadan.

Six different public secondary schools qualified for the contest. The schools drawn from across the city of Ibadan were Government College Ibadan, St. Teresa’s College, Oke – Ado; Oke – Bola Comprehensive High School, Oke – Bola; St. Anne’s School, Molete; Yejide Girls Grammar School, Molete; and Queen’s School, Ibadan. The theme for this year’s contest was ‘A country in multiple crises’ while the six schools had different sub themes, which were Ritual Killings, Human Trafficking, Communal Clashes, Armed Robbery, Religious Crisis and Internet Fraud respectively.

Students of each participating schools were made to write their plays based on the chosen sub-themes, and also direct, stage-manage, and prepare their costumes, with minimum supervision from their teachers. Preview of Rehearsals of each school had earlier taken place between 19th and 22nd November, 2019 at the respective theatre halls of each of the participating schools.

At the end of the contest, Oke –Bola Comprehensive High School emerged as the overall winner. The title of their playlet was ‘Communal Clashes’ written by Matthew Christiana. Damilola Shittu’s ‘Wrong Decision’ and Obagunwa Moyinoluwa’s ‘Yahoo Yahoo’ earned St. Teresa’s College, Oke – Ado and Queens School Ibadan the first and second runners-up positions respectively.

Saula Sherifideen’s ‘Life Without Money’ could not safe his school - Government College Ibadan, GCI as GCI – the defending Champion and traditional host failed to win a spot on their own home soil.

The 2020 edition of DJ Bullock Inter – School Theatre Contest, organised by DJ Bullock Endowment Fund Committee chaired by Banwo Smith (1959); was used to mark the 10th Anniversary of the demise of Derek John Bullock, the former Principal of Government College Ibadan who was notorious for his theatre productions in conjunction with St. Anne’s School, Molete using students as cast and crew. Dereck John Bullock served as GCI Principal between 1960 and 1968, and passed away on the 27th of December, 2009.
