Born on the 17th of December 1943, in Odoni town in the Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, Godfrey Bayour Preware had his early education at Araromi Baptist School, Lagos. He proceeded to Government College Ibadan in 1956 where he successfully completed the West African School Certificate.

Between 1967 and 1972, he attended Universities of Lagos, Nigeria and Dakar, Senegal from where he obtained a BA (Hons) degree and a Diploma in French Studies respectively. He also holds a Hong Kong University post-graduate certificate in Chinese Studies and an M. (Phil)
degree from Centre for Diplomatic and Strategic Studies, Paris, France.

Amb. Godfrey Preware began his Diplomatic Career in 1972 when he joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs then known as External Affairs. In the 21-year period (1972 — 1993), he served in various capacities at home (Nigeria) and abroad in Nigeria’s Diplomatic and Consular Missions in Togo, Benin Republic, New York, Netherlands, France and Hong Kong.

In 1998, he was appointed Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency in the Presidency only to be redeployed in the following year to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as the Permanent Secretary. In 2001, he was redeployed to Federal Ministry of Labour as Permanent Secretary and in 2002 was again redeployed to Federal Ministry of Education as Permanent Secretary before his retirement from the Federal Civil Service in December 2003. In June 2004, Amb. Godfrey Preware was appointed Nigeria’s Ambassador to France.

Amb. Godfrey Preware is a Member of the National Institute. In 2003, he was honoured by GCIOBA, Abuja Branch with the Abuja GCIOBA Distinguished Old Boy Award (ADOBA). He was also honoured in 2004 with the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) by the Nigerian Government and the Commander of the Legion of Honour of the Republic of France by the French Government.

Amb. Godfrey Preware has participated in many courses, conferences and seminars within and outside the country. He has also in the course of his Career, been involved in many ad-hoc assignments, including membership of the Investigative Panel on the Jos Crisis in 2008 - 2010. He loves reading, travelling and fish farming.

He is married to Ada Preware nee Alakia-George and the marriage is blessed with six children.

He has been an active member of GCIOBA Abuja Branch and has been honoured with the ABUJA DISTINGUISHED OLD BOYS AWARD. He is currently having some health challenges and as such could not be physically present here to receive this National Merit Award.
