Banwo Smith (1959) Wins Old Boys Race At The GCI 79th Inter House Athletics Competition

The students of Government College Ibadan had their 79th Inter House Athletics Competition on Wednesday, the 21st of March, 2018 at the Main Pitch of the College.

The event, chaired by the Pro – Chancellor of Lead City University, Ibadan, Prof. Jide Owoeye, an Old Boy of the School, had different Track events ranging from Sprints, Middle Distance Race, Long Distance Race, and Relay Race for both Junior and Senior students of the five Houses (Swanston, Grier, Field, Carr and Powell Houses). Match Past, majorly for the Junior Students, was also among the sporting activities.

The Special Guest of Honour, Prof. Joseph Adeniyi Olowofela – the Honourable Commissioner of Education, Science and Technology of Oyo State was ably represented by the Honourable Commissioner of Youth and Sports, Barrister Abayomi Oke who is also an Old Boy of the School. The former Captain of Nigerian and West African Cricket Teams, Prof. Jide Bademosi (Grier, 1953) was among the dignitaries at the event.

The Cadet Corps, as usual, had earlier entertained the distinguished guests, parents and students of the School; with their Full Parade, while the Oyo State Police Band was in attendance to supply the sonorous parade music.

The Old Boys Race, a 100 meters race was competed by Old Boys of different generations, among which were the Chairman of the School Governing Board, Banwo Smith (Field, 1959), the Senior School Principal, Tunde Odekunle (Powell, 1976), Kunle Adegoke (Swanston, 1983), Alawode Ayoade (Swanston, 1997), Adebusuyi Kehinde (Carr, 1995), Lawal Akinkunmi (Field, 2000) and other five Old Boys.

At the end of the keenly contested Novelty race, the ancient Old Boy, Banwo Smith (Field, 1959) won the race while Kunle Adegoke (Swanston, 1983) aka Dego and the School Principal, Tunde Odekunle (Powell, 1976) emerged as the first and second runners-up respectively.

The 2018 79th Inter-house Athletics Competition had Grier, Swanston and Field houses take the first, second and third positions, while Powell and Carr Houses emerged as the third and fourth runners-up respectively.

It would be recalled that Carr House was the defending champion but fell to Grier House, their age-long rival.
