SCHOOL MERIT AWARD YEAR:

The world welcomed Segun to the family of Ajai senior on 8th February, 1944. His mother was a petty trader. He was mentored by several relations from age two because of his father’s constant transfer to several railway stations in the country. Primary schooling was at Abeokuta and Offa. From St. Mark’s School, Otta, he entered Government College Ibadan with 49 others in 1959. His awe for Railway Line masters made him desire to become one but his encounter with Prof. Ayo Banjo, an English language Teacher in his Form 2 during a career talk, motivated him to opt for journalism. After obtaining his 1963 West African School Certificate, he wanted to start work immediately as a journalist in daily Times, Lagos but fortune smiled on him through a benefactor none other than Mr D.J. Bullock, his Principal, who offered to pay 50% of his Higher School fees. Segun Ajai left GCI in 1965.

1966 saw him as a Teacher in Baptist High School, Abeokuta for a short while. He enrolled at the Apapa Centre of the School of careers, UK and was armed with a Diploma in Journalism in December 1967. Employed by Daily Times as a temporary staff, he took over the human angle gossip column “Do not say I told you”

Fortuitously, through Hockey, his favourite game in GCI and the suggestion of an Old Boy, Wole Owopelu, Segun got employment in Barclays Bank. His romance with banking has proved a life-long affair. He is a qualified Banker and an Associate of the Institute of Bankers. On his return to Nigeria and to the staff training centre in Yaba, he pioneered a house journal there and opened the Jos Staff Training Centre. He was also Training Manager for Afribank Plc.

He has held many management positions in different organizations.

He was the Secretary GCIOBA 1980 – 1982 and Vice Chairman GCIOBA 2006-2007. He was the Chairman of GCIOBA Lagos branch from 2008 to 2014. He was also Class Secretary 1959/65 Set and Chairman of the Class Set from 1980 till date.
