2017 Message (II) from the GCIOBA National President

MESSAGE FROM THE GCIOBA - NATIONAL PRESIDENT AT THE 2017 NATIONAL REUNION

Dear Old Boys, Young Girls and Guests, I am delighted to welcome you to the 2017 Reunion.

Last year, I informed you of the various positive developments in the school including infrastructural upgrade, teachers’ recruitment and support, Ideas Group project, GCIOBA House project, Rotational Annual Public Lectures, GCI Educational Foundation, Social Media platforms and many more.

In the last one year, we have made relentless efforts to partner with the State Government on the Management of GCI. I am pleased to report that the State Government has set up a Governing Board for GCI with Banwo Smith (1959) as Chairman, Yomi Jones (1963) and Femi Babalola (1975) are Board members. B.T. Odekunle (1976) – the Principal of the Senior Secondary School is the Secretary of the Board. It is our hope that the present arrangement will lead to the re-establishment of standards in the School.

We established a N250Million Intervention Fund to which all Branches and Class Sets were to subscribe. The response at the moment is below par but we are hopeful that more Class Sets and Branches will support the noble cause.

During the year, 12 deserving students were awarded scholarships on the platform of DJB Foundation. Also, during the year, an innovative multi-million naira GCI Museum Project was launched, courtesy of the 1970 Set. The Museum Project is a mobile repository, readily accessible to all Old Boys worldwide and can be accessed on www.gcimuseum.org I thank the 1970 Boys.

Let me remind you that payment of annual dues by Class Sets and Branches is an obligation to assist in the effective running of the National Secretariat.

Finally, I congratulate the 1967, 1977 and 1982 Class Sets who are celebrating 50, 40 and 35 years of entry into GCI respectively. I particularly thank the 1967 Class Set (The Golden Boys) for the renovation of the Physics and Chemistry Laboratories, the 1977 Class for renovating the Class V Block and the Class of 1982 for renovating the SSS 1 Block.

Worthy of mention also are the 1953 and 1961 Sets for keeping in touch with their various pet projects. I also congratulate the Guest Speaker of the Annual Lecture - Wale Babalakin (1971) and the four National Merit Award winners. I really thank the Reunion Planning Committee for a well job done.

Finally, I thank you all for the wonderful support you have given me in the last five years. God bless you all.

BIODUN JOLAOSO (1964)
