1991 SEPTEMBER SET HOLDS HER ANNUAL ESSAY WRITING COMPETITION AND MAIDEN INTERSCHOOL DEBATE COMPETITION

At a time like this when public speaking, oratory prowess, intercommunication skills and intellectual depth are uncommon amongst public secondary school students, the 1991-September Set has deemed it fit to channel their momentum to revive these basic life building skills for the students of Government College Ibadan by organizing an Interschool Debate Competition alongside their usual Annual Essay writing Competition.

The distinguished Set on Thursday, 4th February, 2021, held her yearly essay competition which involved students from SSS 1 and 2 classes. This edition of the contest, regularly organized by the Education Committee of the Set was an exceptional one with the introduction of the debate competition for the two (2) junior schools of GCI.

The 45-minute essay writing titled "Leveraging digital transformation in Nigerian Education for National Development" took place at the Maths Lecture Theatre and had 36 participants, being the best 3 students in English language of each participating class.

Following the Essay Competition was the Interschool Debate titled " E-Learning versus Conventional Learning" between Junior School I and Junior School II which held at the Assembly hall of GCI and compered by a member of 1991-September Set's Education Initiative Committee cum Secretary of the Planning Committee, Dipo Adewunmi (Swanston, 9035).

Mrs. Shobo, the HOD of Languages & Linguistics Department of GCI Senior School was the Chief Judge, supported by two other officers in the department, - Mr Akanni and Miss Adepeju Oluwamakin while the School's Time keeper, Master Timileyin Samuel served as the Time keeper for the competition.

At the end of the debate, Junior School I who premised their argument on E-learning is better than conventional learning won with 835 points while Bolaji Asiwaju, Michael Eze and Abdullahi Omiyale, all of Junior School I Supporting Speakers emerged as the 1st, 2nd and 3rd best speakers with 225 points, 220 points and 207 points respectively. The winners were given prizes as well as their coaches who are members of staff of their school.

Speaking to the audience at the Debate, the National Secretary of Government College Ibadan Old Boys Association (GCIOBA), Yinka Yusuf (1985) appreciated the 1991 September Set for their special interest in the development of the school. He affirmed that the set has distinguished itself by its unwavering and unalloyed support for GCIOBA and GCI at large. He mentioned that many adults today are not eloquent partly because they did not get this kind of opportunity, he urged the students to properly utilize the golden chance to build their oratory prowess.

The Principal of Government College Ibadan, Mr. Oluwole Adewale, thanked the Set for their staunch backing for the school. He specially acknowledged and appreciated the Set’s Chairman, Kolade Enitinwa (Field, 9193) and the Chairman of the Set’s Education Committee, Olajide Awe (Swanston, 9185) for their commitment to the uplift of GCI. He emphasized that it is indeed a privilege for the students to have such an opportunity.

The Principal of Queens School Ibadan, Mrs. Bamidele Oyinloye graced the event. Also in attendance were few members of staff of GCI, some members of 1991-September set and some students of the competing schools as well as David Olayiwola, Secretary of 91-September set who gave the closing remarks.
